What is Outplacement
Simply put, Outplacement is a service aimed at helping your staff move on from their career with you to
- other employment
- self-employment
- further education
- a career break
By supplying professional guidance, support and training during the redundancy process via a series of one-on-one meetings with a consultant or focused group training sessions, possibly combined with ongoing support for a specified time period after the redundancy has taken effect.
This professional support will generally cover:
- Guidance on how to deal with the emotional upheaval and uncertainty that is intrinsic to the redundancy process
- CV review and update
- Job searching techniques
- Interview techniques
By concentrating on the individual, rather than the process, outplacement should provide them with an opportunity to take stock of their current position and re-evaluate where they want to go with their career and consider all of the options available.
The right Outplacement company will provide support and advice independent of the outcome – it is not just about getting a new job (although that would, in most instances, be considered a satisfactory result), it is also about helping the individual to overcome the negative emotions that comes with it – shock, anger, depression, anxiety to name just a few - and see the brighter possibilities for the future.
This support and training can be provided in either group sessions or individually: although the best results will be from individual coaching, group sessions will also provide the necessary support, provided that the consultant is focusing on the individuals in the group and not the group as a unit. It has to be remembered that we are dealing with people and not a process – the individual matters.
Redundancy can be an intensely emotional period, the initial reactions typically being shock and numbness, followed by anger and bitterness leading to possible resentment and resignation, but with the right support at the right time, what initially seems to be a very negative situation can be turned into a positive experience, allowing the individual to move ahead with renewed vigor and self-belief.
